Safe Place Siouxland hosts domestic violence vigil
Mother of domestic violence victim: “If you see something, say something”
SIOUX CITY (KTIV) - The National Domestic Violence Hotline says an average of 24 people per minute are victims of rape, physical violence or stalking by an intimate partner in the United States.
October is Domestic Violence Awareness month.
Thursday night, the organization “Safe Place Siouxland” hosted a vigil to remember domestic violence victims.
Organizers say the purpose is to share resources and provide support for those who may feel like they don’t have anyone to help them.
The organization asked Taffy Zoelle to speak. Zoelle’s stepdaughter, Sarah, was murdered by her boyfriend in 2022 in an act of domestic violence.
During the vigil, a portion of the Sarah’s 911 call was read. During that call Sarah was shot and later died.
Zoelle says it’s important to share her stepdaughter’s story to keep it from happening to other families.
“I know that it’s hard for us on this Earth to understand everything. But, I know Sarah would want us to be here tonight sharing her story and preventing this from happening to other women, children, men, families, kids. You know, it can happen to anybody,“ said Zoelle.
The vigil ended with people walking around the block, in downtown Sioux City, in remembrance of the victims.
Zoelle had a message for the Siouxland community, “if you see something, say something”.
